San Diego County Motorcycle Fatality Accident | Safety Tips & Prevention

Posted on Feb 22, 2011

Sadly, another motorcycle fatality has come to the county of San Diego, California. This one occurred yesterday on "Presidents Day." Mark Paul Thompson, 27 years old, was riding with friends when he lost control of his westbound 2008 Honda in the 16000 block of Highland Valley Road in Ramona, California shortly before 1 p.m. Police authorities released the name today of a U.S. Marine from Temecula, California who was killed in the motorcycle crash/accident.  News releases on this unfortunate death is rather limited. Mr. Thompson was motorcycle riding with his friends when he lost control of his westbound 2008 Honda in the 16000 block of Highland Valley Road in Ramona shortly before 1 p.m. Monday. Mr. Thompson, who was wearing a helmet, crashed into a tree and died at the scene, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.  I am very sorry that this happened since wearing a helmet can usually (significantly) reduce the risk of death in a motorcycle accident.

In previous blogs, articles and frequently asked questions sections, I have spoken about how losing control of a motorcycle can occur. Especially, if there was no other vehicle around!  This is known as a single vehicle motorcycle accident. One of the things a legal expert has to look at is the terrain of where the motorcycle accident occurred.  In my injury practice, I have seen first hand ill repaired roads or roadwork that did not have adequate warning signs.  Beyond the physical terrain, one has to examine, possibly, the motorcycle itself - for any possible defects. If the terrain or road surface conditions were normal, and the motorcycle too, then rider error is usually examined next.  It is true that motorcycle rider error is usually to blame on a single vehicle motorcycle accident. If you are a motorcycle enthusiast in California, the following link can better explain some motorcycle safety tips.  I am very sorry to report this news article and my condolences go out to Mr. Thompson's family and friends. If you ride motorcycles on California roads, please be careful out there!
