RULES OF THE ROAD: Do California bicyclists have to obey the same rules of the road as California motorists?

A: Yes.  Bicycle riders have the same rights and responsibilities as motorcycle and car drivers. They must stop at traffic signs and signals and observe traffic laws. Bicycles in San Diego have the right to use the whole lane when there is no bike lane available. Cars should not travel in bike lanes.  Motorists need to be aware of this as many out-of-state drivers sometimes do not understand this rule.
